Undisputedly one of London’s most famous landmarks, Buckingham Palace has been the official residence of the King of England since 1837 when Queen Victoria made it her primary home. Located in the City of Westminster and very much a working building, employing almost 200 staff. It has been the location for countless state occasions and has hosted many of the world’s great and good over the years, from presidents and ambassadors, charity workers and explorers, to novelists and movie stars. More than 50,000 people visit each year as guests of the Monarch, and a number of its 755 spectacular rooms are open to the public during the summer months.

 

The balcony of Buckingham Palace is one of the most famous in the world. The first recorded Royal balcony appearance took place in 1851, when Queen Victoria stepped onto it during celebrations for the opening of the Great Exhibition. Since then, Royal Balcony appearances have marked many occasions from VE Day in 1945 to Jubilees, Trooping the Colour and an extraordinary Fly-Past by 100 aeroplanes to mark the RAF’s centenary in 2018.

Visiting the palace & Changing the Guard

Many people also visit to witness the Changing of the Guard, when soldiers gather outside the Palace and perform an official ceremony that signifies the handing over of duties from the Old Guard to the New. The ceremony starts at 10:45am and lasts around 45 minutes, although it’s recommended guests arrive early for the best possible view.

Nearest Tube Stations to the Palace are Victoria Station and St. James’s Park Tube Station which are less than a ten-minute walk from Buckingham Palace, which are directly connected to South Kensingtons Underground.From Buckingham Palace, WestminsterAbbey is a fifteen-minute walk along Birdcage Walk.
